Robert and his wife Margaret had a house in Kingsport, TN they rented out. It burned down and many family photos were lost. This was probably among those that were saved.

Robert Corbett Brickey is in the middle row on the left side. He went to Berea College in Kentucky, and these could be school friends, or just friends from a church group or something where he lived in Sullivan Co., TN. This was taken in the late 1920's. Jacob Kern, line 11 of the Shelby Co., IN 1840 census, was born 4 Jul 1779 in VA and died 1843 in Shelby Co., IN. You can see a typed version of this census record here. He was 61 years old at the time of this census. He married Sarah Ryan (1780-1818), and they had at least seven children. According to this census, there was one male under age 5 (b. 1835-1840), one male age 5-10 (b. 1830-1835), two males age 20-30 (b. 1810-1820), one male age 30-40 (b. 1800-1810), one male age 60-70 (b. 1770-1780), one female under age 5 (b. 1835-1840), one male age 5-10 (b. 1830-1835), and one female age 20-30 (b. 1810-1820). Jacob's wife, Sarah, had died by this time, so some of these were probably grand children or other relatives. Their son, Isaac Kern was born 29 Nov 1806 in Shenandoah Co., Va. and died 20 Aug 1893 in Scott Co., Va. Isaac Kern married (1) Mary Catherine Houseman and (2) Elizabeth Good. Isaac was living in Virginia at the time of this census.

I took these photos at on two separate trips to Arcadia United Methodist Church on Bloomingdale Road in Kingsport, TN. There are many Larkeys and other relatives buried in this cemetery. The oldest marked grave that I know of is that of John Larkey, who died in 1854. There are many unmarked graves as well, including John Larkey's wife, Margaret.

Brickey Mill

The Brickey Mill is located in Scott County, Virginia near Fort Blackmore. James Brickey operated the mill at one time. This photo was taken in the fall of 2000. The following quote is from this website:

The original Brickey Mill on Stony Creek, north of Ft. Blackmore, in Scott Co., VA, was built about 1845 by Peter Brickey. Peter Brickey ran the mill until his death. After his death the mill fell to his son James Brickey and at his death to his son John Brickey. John traded the mill to George Wolfe who died and left it to his daughter who was a widow Jennings. Mrs. Jennings sold the mill to Will Owens who at his death left it to his son-in-law Graham G. Brickey.

The present mill was rebuilt by George Wolfe around 1907-1908. The wheels for this mill were made by James Stewart, who along with his father before him were noted millwrights of the Rye Cove section. Much of the mill machinery is intact and the mill ran until just before World War II. The old water wheel at the back of the building has fallen down and almost rotted away. The mill was operated by an "overshot" wheel with the mill race running from a very large spring further up Stony Creek.

James Larkey homeplace

This is the home of James Larkey in Scott County, Virginia. James Larkey was born in 1810 in Scott County to John Larkey and Margaret Brashears. James married Eleanor Cattron in 1833. She was the daughter of Peter Cattron. This poplar log home was built the same as many of the homes in the area were built at that time. They raised 12 children here in this home on Timbertree Branch. The old home place burned down some years ago.

This picture was taken on John's 91st birthday in Scott Co., VA in front of the log cabin that his grandfather, James Larkey built. John died the next day at the home of his daughter, Vivian. The cabin burned down some time later.
