Jacob Kern, line 11 of the Shelby Co., IN 1840 census, was born 4 Jul 1779 in VA and died 1843 in Shelby Co., IN. You can see a typed version of this census record here. He was 61 years old at the time of this census. He married Sarah Ryan (1780-1818), and they had at least seven children. According to this census, there was one male under age 5 (b. 1835-1840), one male age 5-10 (b. 1830-1835), two males age 20-30 (b. 1810-1820), one male age 30-40 (b. 1800-1810), one male age 60-70 (b. 1770-1780), one female under age 5 (b. 1835-1840), one male age 5-10 (b. 1830-1835), and one female age 20-30 (b. 1810-1820). Jacob's wife, Sarah, had died by this time, so some of these were probably grand children or other relatives. Their son, Isaac Kern was born 29 Nov 1806 in Shenandoah Co., Va. and died 20 Aug 1893 in Scott Co., Va. Isaac Kern married (1) Mary Catherine Houseman and (2) Elizabeth Good. Isaac was living in Virginia at the time of this census.

Nicholas Harrison Kern was born in 1839 in Botetourt Co., VA and died 18 Aug 1929. He was the son of Henry Kern and Sarah "Sally" Wilson. He married Sarah Jane Myers on 27 Feb 1894 in Botetourt Co., VA. She died on 3 Jul 1926. She was the daughter of Jacob Myers and Elizabeth Johnson.

She was born 05 Jan 1861 in Saltpetre Cave, Botetourt Co., VA, and died 03 Feb 1954. Charles is buried in Mays Cemetery near Saltpetre Cave, VA.
3 Ada Lee Kern born 1868 in Botetourt Co., VA and died in 1964. She married John William Mays on 18 Sep 1883 in Botetourt Co., VA. He was the son of John Mays and Agnes Reid. He was born 18 Dec 1852 in Botetourt Co., VA and died 1922 in VA.
4 Lewis Mason "Lew" Kern born 10 Aug 1870 in Botetourt Co., VA and died 1947 He married Helen Matthews Harris. She was born 1879, and died 1960.
5 Albert Jackson Kern born 1874 and died 1933. He married Robby Rule Simpson on 18 Nov 1902

Morning Virginia1 Kerns was the daughter of John Kern and Julia Brickey and the sister of Martha Melinda Kerns. She was born 20 Oct 1869 in Scott Co., VA, and died of a stroke on 05 Nov 1950 in Scott Co., VA. She married Marion Amos Donnels on 18 Jul 1888 in Scott Co., VA. He was the son of Charles Donnels and Provance Bowling. He was born 12 Mar 1869 in Wise Co., VA, and died 01 Jul 1950 in Wise Co., VA. They are buried in White Oak Gap Cemetery, Dorchester, VA. They had the following children:

Martha Melinda Kerns was the dauther of John Kern and Julia Brickey. She was born 04 Oct 1877 in Scott Co., VA, and died 25 May 1973 in Kingsport, Sullivan Co., TN. She married (1) John Floyd Brickey 15 Aug 1892 in Scott Co., VA, son of James Brickey and Matilda Sloan. He was born 12 Sep 1870 in Scott Co., VA, and died 20 Jun 1919 in Scott Co., VA. She married (2) Noah T. Hobbs Abt. 1920. Noah T. Hobbs is buried in Herman Cemetery. She is buried in Oak Hill Cmetery Kingsport, Sullivan Co., TN.
